Lake Fontana is an absolutely gorgeous lake bordered by the Smokey National Park on one side and the Nantahala National Forest on the other. The lake has been revered by many as the Southeast’s best smallmouth lake. The crystal clear waters and steep banks offer deep-water habitat for many species of fish including walleye, large and smallmouth bass, trout and musky. Located one hour travel time from Asheville, near Bryson City and Cherokee, it is a favorite destination for many sightseers who travel to Western North Carolina. This 11,685 acre lake is hard to beat when the leaves are changing in the fall and the bass are feeding voraciously in the cooling waters.
